What to look for when you are choosing a prayer app

Most prayer apps do the same five things. The differences that matter are the ones you find out about later: whether you can change the calculation method, whether it sells your location, and whether the feature you came for is behind a subscription.

The honest version

Four questions worth asking

Can you change the calculation method and adjust individual prayers? Prayer times are a calculation, and reasonable communities disagree about the inputs. An app that hides the method is asking you to trust a default that may not match the masjid down the road.

How is it paid for? An app with no revenue model and no ads is either someone's unpaid weekend or is being funded by something you cannot see. An app with ads is funded by knowing where you are and what you do.

What is free, and what is not? Plenty of apps are free to install and then put the Qur'an audio, the tracker, or the ad-free experience behind a subscription. That is a legitimate business, but it is worth finding out on day one rather than day thirty.

What happens to your data? Prayer apps ask for your location, which is the single most valuable piece of data an advertiser can buy. Read what the app says it does with it.

Rather than name products whose features change every release, here are the categories most people are choosing between. Find the column that describes what you are using now.

Categories, not specific products: named apps change what they offer between releases, and we would rather not publish a claim about a competitor that goes stale. Check the app you are considering against these rows yourself — they are the questions, not our verdict on anyone else.

Where Prayr is different

The choices we made deliberately

No advertising, so no tracking
There is no ad network in Prayr, which means there is nothing to be gained from knowing where you are beyond calculating your prayer times.
You never pay to pray
The Qur'an, the audio, the du'as, the tracker and the zakat calculator are free to everyone, permanently. Worship is not something we will put a price on.
The method is yours to choose
Calculation method, Asr school, high-latitude rule, and a per-prayer offset — all visible, all editable.
Runs in a browser
No app store, no install, no admin rights. It works on a locked-down library computer and an old tablet alike.
No feed to perform for
No friends, no followers, no streak leaderboard. Your prayer history is between you and Allah.
Honest about what it is not
The zakat calculator does arithmetic, not fiqh. Prayer times are a calculation you can correct. We would rather say so than imply certainty we do not have.

Questions

Choosing an app

Still stuck? Message us on X or email us. A person answers.

Is Prayr really free?

Everything you came here to do is free, permanently: prayer times, the tracker, the Qur'an and its audio, the du'as, and the zakat calculator. There is no advertising anywhere, and no step where a feature you have started using asks for payment. If we later build something new that costs us money to run, it may carry a price — but nothing that is free today will ever stop being free.

How does Prayr make money if there are no ads?

Today it does not — it is built and paid for by the two people who make it. We would rather that changed openly than quietly: if Prayr earns, it will be from people who choose to support it and from things we build that are not acts of worship. It will not be from advertising, and not from your location or your attention, because we do not want a business that depends on either.

Do I need to install anything to try it?

No. Open it in a browser and everything works immediately, without an account. If you like it you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

Can I move my data if I switch away later?

Your settings and history are tied to your account. A full export and self-serve account deletion from settings are being built now; until they ship, email support@prayr-app.com and we will remove the account and its data for you. We would rather you leave cleanly than feel stuck.

What does Prayr do with my location?

It calculates your prayer times with it. There are no ads and we do not sell your data, so there is no one to sell your location to. The only analytics is optional, privacy-respecting and switched on only if you agree to it, and it never receives your location. See the privacy policy for the specifics.
